Spanish Fiesta Day: Celebrating the Rich Cultures of the Spanish-Speaking World
Our whole school was bursting with energy and excitement as we celebrated Spanish Fiesta Day—a vibrant, whole-school event that explored the diverse cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. From Pre-School to Year 6, pupils engaged in a range of creative, cultural and language-based activities that deepened their appreciation for global diversity and inspired a love for learning languages.
Children discovered that Spanish is spoken in many countries across the world, and used maps to locate nations such as Spain, Mexico, Peru, Argentina, Cuba, Chile, Guatemala, and Colombia. Each class explored the unique traditions, folktales, and customs of one of these countries. They created beautiful artworks inspired by national artists, enjoyed traditional folktale stories, and learned that while Spanish unites these countries linguistically, each has its own rich identity and cultural heritage.
Music and movement were at the heart of the celebration. Pupils learned traditional dances, and those in Key Stage 2 enjoyed a lively salsa workshop, embracing rhythm and teamwork through Latin dance. Across the school, pupils also learned Spanish songs and new vocabulary, bringing the language to life in fun and engaging ways.
A highlight of the day was our pen pal exchange with our partner school in Spain, CEIP Gonzalo de Berceo. After receiving thoughtful introduction letters from their Year 2 pupils, our Year 3 children wrote replies in Spanish, sharing details about their lives, school, and interests. We then came together in a live Zoom call, where both schools shared their work and spoke about their experiences. It was a proud and memorable moment, offering pupils a real connection to Spanish-speaking peers and giving them a chance to use their language skills in an authentic and meaningful way.
Spanish Fiesta Day was more than just a celebration—it was a powerful reminder of the value of learning languages and understanding different cultures. The day encouraged curiosity, empathy, creativity, and global awareness, helping our pupils see themselves as part of a wider international community. It was an inspiring day of connection, culture, and confidence-building across the school.
