F1 Learning Sectors Project: International STEM Collaboration for Global Challenges
As part of our ongoing commitment to global learning and innovation, our school proudly took part in the F1 Learning Sectors Project, a prestigious programme supported by Formula 1 and the British Council. This exciting international STEM initiative connected our pupils with those from Lakshmi School in India, working together to tackle real-world environmental challenges affecting both of our countries.
Each school was tasked with identifying a local global issue for their partner to solve using STEM knowledge and skills. India challenged us to find sustainable solutions for ground and rainwater conservation in response to their national water crisis, while we asked India to explore ways to help manage flooding in the UK—a growing concern due to climate change.
Our Year 5 and 6 pupils rose to the challenge, conducting research and investigating engineering solutions before designing a creative and cost-effective filtration and water collection system. This included adaptable guttering, filters, and storage units that could be integrated into the interiors and exteriors of homes. Pupils tested a variety of filter materials, evaluated the effectiveness of their designs, and even calculated the affordability of their proposed system to ensure its real-world application across different communities in India.
Meanwhile, our partners in India developed innovative ideas such as sponge cities and green roofs to help prevent flooding in the UK. Over the course of the project, we joined together for two live Zoom calls, where pupils from both schools presented their designs, shared feedback, and asked thoughtful, critical questions. Our team of presenters articulated their solutions with clarity, creativity, and confidence—responding expertly to queries from their peers in India.
This project had a remarkable impact on our pupils, helping them to:
Apply STEM skills in real-world contexts
Understand and empathise with global challenges faced by other countries
Collaborate internationally, building communication, problem-solving and teamwork skills
Grow in confidence through presenting and defending their ideas
The F1 Learning Sectors Project was a transformative experience for our pupils, opening their eyes to the power of science, technology, and global cooperation in shaping a better, more sustainable future. It has truly inspired many of them to pursue further opportunities in STEM and international collaboration.
