Chinese (Lunar) New Year
As part of our =celebrations for Chinese New Year, pupils across the school took part in learning and cultural activities focused on the Year of the Snake. A highlight of the day was the sharing of “The Lady and the Snake”—a retelling of the famous Legend of the White Snake from Chinese folklore.
The story follows Bai Suzhen, a magical white snake who transforms into a kind and beautiful woman. Her deep love for Xu Xian, a mortal man, weaves a tale of courage, sacrifice, and loyalty that captivated our pupils. The story's themes of love overcoming obstacles, identity, and transformation had a powerful emotional impact, sparking thoughtful discussions about trust, empathy, and the strength of character.
Children across the school engaged with the story in creative and meaningful ways. Some classes role-played key scenes, bringing the characters to life through drama and movement, while others created vibrant snake-themed crafts to mark the symbolic animal of the year. These hands-on activities helped deepen pupils' understanding and appreciation of Chinese traditions.
We were also delighted to welcome parents from our school community, who visited classrooms to share their experiences and customs around Chinese New Year. Their insights brought a personal and authentic touch to the celebrations, helping pupils connect what they had learned with real-life traditions and practices.
Our Chinese New Year celebration was a wonderful opportunity to explore culture through storytelling, creativity, and community. It reminded us all of the richness and beauty of global traditions, and the importance of learning from one another.
