European Day of Languages

To mark European Day of Languages (or Day of Languages), on the 26th September, pupils across our school came together to celebrate the rich tapestry of languages spoken within our community. Children were invited to share words and phrases from their home languages with their classmates, proudly teaching greetings, numbers, and simple expressions in languages ranging from Arabic and Urdu to Italian, Polish, and many more. This celebration not only highlighted the cultural diversity within our school but also helped foster mutual respect and curiosity among our pupils.

As part of the day’s events, pupils in Years 4 to 6 took part in exciting language workshops led by Year 11 students from our local secondary school. These 30-minute sessions introduced pupils to French, Spanish, German, and Polish in a fun and engaging way. Through games, role-plays, and interactive tasks, our pupils got a taste of new languages and cultures, while the older students gained valuable experience in leadership and teaching.

The day offered wonderful benefits for everyone involved. Younger pupils developed confidence in language learning and broadened their awareness of the world beyond their own experiences. It also gave our multi-linguist speakers a chance to shine, boosting self-esteem and cultural pride. Meanwhile, the collaborative workshops encouraged cross-school partnerships and inspired many of our children to explore languages further.

European Day of Languages truly demonstrated the power of communication and the joy of learning from one another.
