Children with a Loved One in Prison

Children with a Loved One in Prison

As a school, we recognise that children who have a parent, carer, or close family member in prison can face significant emotional, social, and educational challenges, including anxiety, stigma, disrupted routines, and difficulties engaging in learning — issues well‑documented by research such as Children Heard and Seen. We are committed to creating a trauma‑informed and non‑judgmental environment where all pupils feel safe, heard, and supported. This includes working closely with families, offering in‑school emotional support, and helping pupils build resilience and connection with peers.

We understand that this is a sensitive and personal topic, and we do not expect parents or carers to disclose information if they are not comfortable. However, in order to provide the best support for children, it can be helpful for us to have an indication if a child has a parent, carer, or family member in prison; or previously been in prison.

To assist with this, we have put together a feedback form that families can use to share information confidentially. Completing this form does not mean we will speak directly to the child about the situation, but it gives us the opportunity to understand who may be affected and to ensure that appropriate support is available within the school.

We are also able to offer support directly to families where this may be helpful. This could include guidance, signposting to local and national services, or advice on helping children cope with the impact of having a loved one in prison. If families would like to access this support, we encourage them to complete the feedback form. This allows us to understand your needs confidentially and ensure that the right help is available, while respecting your privacy and the sensitivity of the situation.
