YEAR 5 CURRICULUM AUTUMN TERM 2009

NUMERACY

We are continuing with our  abacus maths scheme that combines fun practical and written exercises.

Numeracy homework will continue to be sent out every Wednesday and will be handed in the following

Monday. This is often a game or activity to be completed with a partner.

LITERACY/SCIENCE

This half term we are combining a literacy unit on recounts, reports and explanations with a science topic of Earth, Moon and Sun. This will give the children a chance to have a deeper learning opportunity while still covering our literacy objectives. We have started by discussing what the children already know and what they would like to learn about. They are very excited about the topic and we will be including a variety of practical, written and research lessons.

Our trip to the Think Tank in Birmingham will then consolidate the children’s learning.

HISTORY

This term the children are studying the Greeks. Here are a few of the things that we will cover. They will be studying when and where ancient Greece was, the importance of the Olympic games to the Ancient Greeks and what made the ancient Greeks such powerful fighters.

GEOGRAPHY

Well done! The children produced some fantastic geography projects last term. I was very impressed. The opportunity to produce work using ICT has really inspired some children who sometimes find written work more challenging.

PE

The children will have two hours of PE a week and will be encouraged to follow a healthy diet. This term  we are doing athletics outside, so the children will need pumps or trainers. Can the children have their PE kit in school all week please.

ICT

In ICT we are looking at the limitations of search engines and how using the correct search terms can help when searching for information.

PSHE/SEAL

The topic this term is ‘relationships’ and we will be studying the different types of relationships, including marriage, and those between families and friends. We will be looking at how people’s emotions change and to realise the nature and consequences of racism, teasing, bullying and aggressive behaviour.

ART AND DESIGN

This term the children will  be continuing their topic of people in action.

MUSIC

This term we are very lucky to have the continued support of a specialist music Teacher. We will be working with junk instruments this term and the children will be making their own instruments.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

We will be completing 1 hours RE a week. The topic this term is a ‘sense of awe’
